FAQs
How many sessions will I need?
This really depends on your goals, or what you wish to achieve from counselling. Some clients may only need a few sessions, whereas some may need longer-term therapy. This is something we will regularly discuss during our time together.
Online or face-to-face?
The choice is yours! Some clients prefer to work in-person, some prefer the convenience of online. I am happy to work with whichever bests suits you. We can also combine online and face-to-face if preferred.
How long and how often are sessions?
Sessions are one hour long, and are usually weekly, unless otherwise discussed.
What if I have never been to counselling, and I don’t know what to talk about?
It is perfectly normal to feel this way. We only talk about what you want to talk about. It’s my job to encourage and support you, so if we get stuck, I can ask questions that may prompt you, or ask you to reflect.
How do I know if we’re a good match?
I offer a free 20 minute consultation prior to any session. This is a chance for you to ask any questions, and see if you feel comfortable working with me, and vice versa. If after a few sessions things do not feel comfortable, and you are unsure you want to continue our work together, it’s important to be open and honest. We can discuss this, and I can refer you on to another therapist if required. Sometimes you have to try a few therapists to find the right fit!
How do I know if counselling is right for me?
Everything is worth trying once! Counselling is for everyone, taking that first step is courageous, and who knows, you may even enjoy it (eventually)! Talking to a therapist, someone that is supportive, encouraging and kind can put you at ease. We can always discuss your concerns during our initial consultation, or in session.
What is your approach?
My training allows me to work pluralistically, meaning that no single therapy fits all. I work using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic and Humanistic approaches.
- CBT is a structured approach involving action-orientated therapy. It helps by breaking the negative cycle of how your thoughts, feelings and actions are all connected. It’s designed to help you develop practical coping strategies to improve your daily mental wellbeing.
- The Psychodynamic approach involves looking at unconscious processes, and how your past experiences may shape your current thoughts and behaviours.
- The Humanistic approach focuses on self-discovery and personal growth. It allows you to realise your full potential, your own strengths, and empowers you to make more meaningful choices.
The heart of my practice is person-centred. I offer a safe, confidential, non-judgmental and supportive space. Our working relationship is key, and is the foundation for effective counselling. I believe in the work we do, therefore I believe in you.
What happens in our first session?
Our first session together will be talking about your goals, a little bit of your history, and about who you are. Getting to know you and who you are helps me to understand you better.
